What to do with the kids when it rains!

Rainy days are part of life on the Devon coast, but they rarely spoil the magic of a stay in Salcombe. In fact, when the clouds roll in and the sea turns a deeper shade of grey, it’s the perfect excuse to slow down and discover some of the wonderful indoor activities and cosy corners that make the South Hams so special for families.

One of the easiest options is simply embracing the charm of Salcombe itself. The town is full of independent shops that are great fun for children to explore. A must-visit is Cranch’s Sweet Shop, a local institution packed floor to ceiling with jars of traditional sweets, chocolates and nostalgic treats. It’s the sort of place where kids can choose a paper bag full of favourites, while parents are inevitably transported back to their own childhood.

If the rain isn’t too heavy, one of the best things you can do is simply lean into the coastal weather. Pull on a wetsuit and head to Bantham Beach, one of the South Hams’ best surfing beaches. Kids often love the sense of adventure that comes with wild weather, and a splash in the waves followed by hot chocolate afterwards can quickly become the highlight of the day.

Another excellent option is a short drive to Dartmouth, one of the most beautiful harbour towns in Devon. Wander the historic streets, explore the independent shops and cafés, and watch the boats moving up and down the River Dart. The harbour always feels lively, even on grey days, and it’s a lovely place to spend a relaxed family afternoon.

Back in Salcombe, a visit to Salcombe Maritime Museum is also well worth it. It’s small but fascinating, telling the story of Salcombe’s long seafaring history, shipbuilding traditions and its connections to global trade. Children often enjoy spotting the model boats and imagining the adventures of sailors who once set off from these very waters.

Of course, rainy days can also be the perfect excuse to slow things down at The Hideaway itself. Set up a long lunch, play board games around the table, or let the kids build a den with cushions while the rain taps on the windows. With views across Salcombe and the estuary beyond, it can actually be one of the most relaxing ways to spend a day.

Food is another wonderful rainy-day activity. Cosy up in one of Salcombe’s cafés or family-friendly restaurants and enjoy a long lunch. Many places welcome children warmly, and a warm meal after a wet morning always lifts spirits.

Sometimes the best plan is simply staying in. The Hideaway was designed for exactly that, a comfortable space, good food, a few games, and the sound of rain outside can create some of the most memorable family moments of a holiday.

And remember, rainy days in Salcombe rarely last forever. The clouds usually drift away, the sea brightens again, and suddenly the beaches are calling once more. Until then, there’s plenty to keep young explorers happily entertained.
